Manchester University has more than 10 acres of land dedicated to sports and recreation
for students, faculty, and staff and utilized by the Spartans to prepare for athletic competition.

The Physical Education and Recreation Center (PERC) serves as the hub of sports activity. Dedicated in 1982, the PERC includes classroom and office space; a complete fitness center; two handball/racquetball courts, a performance laboratory, and full athletic training room.
Perc Renovations Benefit Students of Manchester University
Manchester University’s Physical Education and Recreation Center (PERC) received its second major renovation since its original construction in 1982. The $1.5 million project funded additional locker rooms, new athletic training facilities, new classrooms and a resurfacing of the PERC’s Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The Brown Fitness Center also upgraded several of the cardiovascular training equipment to meet the demands of the growing Manchester University student body.
Two new classrooms were constructed, equipped with state of the art technology that will better serve to educate the students of Manchester University. Both classrooms can seat up to 36 students or can be combined into one larger room to host larger classes, special events or meetings throughout the year. To meet the growing numbers of our athletic teams, two new locker rooms were also constructed, each housing 60 stadium-style lockers that can be connected to house larger groups such as football and allow better accommodations for visiting opponents by freeing up existing locker rooms.
Keeping Spartan athletes healthy has always been the goal of the Manchester University athletic training staff. Updates to the athletic training room were designed to allow the athletic training staff and their core of athletic training students to attend to several student-athletes at once with the use of new electronic stem and infrared massage machines or the new warm/cold hydrotherapy stations and modern office facilities for the athletic training staff.
All fans to attend an event at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena notice the gym floor.The floor was sanded down to its original wood, repainted to include a 16-foot Spartan logo at center court and added thicker out of bound lines that contain “Manchester” and “Spartans” at the baselines. The central court’s appearance will be less busy as the lines for auxiliary courts have been left off to give the main floor a crisp, clean feel.
The Leicester '36 and Jean '37 Brown Fitness Center inside the Manchester University Physical Education and Recreation Center received a major overhaul in late March thanks to the Manchester University Visionary Grant program.
Brown Fitness Center opened in May of 1998 as part of the PERC expansion that included an auxiliary gym, fitness center and office space. "The goal of the upgrade was to incorporate the needs of the student body and needs of our student-athletes to remain a contender in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference," said strength and conditioning coach Ron Planz.
Manchester overhauled its cardiovascular section of the fitness center, adding new elliptical, stationary bikes and treadmills. Three new 42" flat-panel televisions help break up the dreaded 30-minute sessions, allowing students, faculty, and staff to enjoy MU's cable television stations. The new cardio machines house headphone jacks that will enable users to tune into the audio of any of the three television sets.
The incline and flat bench stations have all been replaced with four multi-functioning Smith Racks, which allow users to do flat bench, incline bench, squat, clean, dips, and pull-ups all in one place. The Smith Racks include a wooden platform with rubber edges to provide safety precautions for a variety of lifts.
The old Paramount circuit training stations have been replaced with a new sleek and space-saving Paramount cable design that allows users to do a variety of isolated lifts ranging from chest flies, abdominal/oblique lifts, leg press, leg curls, leg extensions, lat press, bicep and tricep curls and much more.
