Ready, Set ... Spartans into pool for first HCACs

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Team and individual awards are up for grabs, as Manchester University competes in the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Friday, Feb. 9-Sunday, Feb. 11.

Meet details: The Vigo County Aquatic Center in Terre Haute, Ind., is the venue and Rose-Hulman is the host institution … Complete information, including a schedule and link to live results, is available at … "It's exciting for the entire conference to have the swimming and diving get recognized with a championship," Coach Mike Kroll said. "The sport itself is not only growing in the HCAC but across the country as more and more schools are adding (swimming and diving). It's a bright future for our league, too, with Hanover College moving that way and Thomas More College of Ohio starting a program that could join the HCAC as well. It shows, to me, how high school swimming and diving has increased over the past years which has led to collegiate growth."

Spartan Shorts: "We want to improve upon on season and all-time best performances," Kroll commented when asked about the Black and Gold's weekend goals. "It'd be great to see our men in the top three and women in the top four team-wise. There is a decent top end speed in both fields." … Several members of MU's teams have top five HCAC times according to's list. For the women, senior Emily Clark (Peru, Ind.) has the fastest clocking in the 100-yard individual medley (1:06.42) and is third-fastest in the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.48); freshman Katie Blystone (Carmel, Ind.) and senior Megan Erwin (Attica, Ind.) are one-three in the 50-yared butterfly (28.9/33.85); junior Jamie McBride (Elkhart, Ind.) and freshman Kaitlyn McCloughan (Columbia City, Ind.) are one-three in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.76/40.06); and freshman Shelby Kell (Charlottesville, Ind.) sits fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle (20:33.48). For the men, junior Nathan Koch (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Kole Kelley (Decatur, Ind.) rank three-four in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.11/34.78); sophomore Christain Poole (Anderson, Ind.) and freshman Kyle Erwin (Attica, Ind.) are one-two in the 50-yard butterfly (25.66/26.98); and junior Guerby Ruuska (Rensselaer, Ind.), Erwin and Koch hold down the first, third and fourth-fastest times in the 100-yard individual medley (1:00.39/1:03.2/1:09.24) … Kroll and his staff also look to get junior men's diver Anjel Clemente (Rensselaer, Ind.) locked into the NCAA Division III regional picture this weekend. "We're hopeful he can reach that mark this weekend," Kroll said. "He's been very close in previous meets."
