Black and Gold sweep past Manhattanville

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Manchester University junior pitcher Temujin Sery (Fort Wayne, Ind.) threw eight strong innings in game one, while the Spartan offense plated nine runs over the final three frames of the nightcap to highlight a 7-3, 10-2 sweep of Manhattanville Sunday, March 3.

Sery, continuing an impressive early showing for the MU starting rotation, didn't issue a walk, struck out three and surrendered only two earned runs in the opener. He was assisted by a seven-run third inning explosion from Coach Rick Espeset's offense. Junior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.) pounded a bases-clearing triple off the wall in right center field, and senior infielder/outfielder Cody Schell (Granger, Ind.) hammered an RBI double to spotlight the rally.

Game two appeared headed towards another pitching duel. MU junior starter Josh Copp (Sharpsvlle, Ind.) worked around some early troubles and kept the Spartans (4-0) down just a run through six innings. Enter the Manchester University offense.

Sophomore outfielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) lofted a sacrifice fly and Schell drilled an RBI single to put MU ahead for good in a two-run seventh. Nieman stepped up again an inning later, this time blistering a shot down the left field line for a two-run double, and junior Ryne Lehrman (Hoagland, Ind.) and freshman Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) helped produce a five-run ninth with two-run singles each.

The Spartans continue their southern trek Monday, March 4. Manchester University faces off with Eastern University of Pennsylvania at 9 a.m. and Catholic University of Washington, D.C., at 12 p.m.

NOTES: Senior outfielder Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) advanced his hitting streak, which began late last season, to nine games with a two-hit game in the opener and one-hit effort in game two. … Monday's games are the final two varsity contests on MU's Myrtle Beach trip. The junior varsity is in action Tuesday, March 5.
