GREENCASTLE, IND. – A pair of 10-run offensive explosions from Manchester University's offense helped lead the Spartans to a key regional sweep of DePauw University Sunday, March 10.
The Spartans, improving to 8-0, used an early-innings rally to win game one 10-2 and the same formula in the late stages to claim the nightcap by a similar score.
In the opener, a pair of two-run singles from sophomore infielder Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) and senior outfielder Cody Shell (Granger, Ind.) highlighted a five-run fourth inning as part of 10 runs over the first four frames. The attack was more than enough for junior pitcher Dylan Padgett (Kirklin, Ind.) who went seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out three en route to his second win of the year.
Kimm came back in game two to spark the Black and Gold. He broke up a scoreless tie in the third with a two-run blast to center field and added a two-run single as part of a five-run seventh inning rally. Senior pitcher Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) benefitted from an eight-run rally over the final three innings to gain the win. Finishing the game with seven strikeouts, he took a no-hitter into the home half of the seventh before the Tigers (0-2) plated a pair of runs.
Manchester University resumes the 2013 season Wednesday, March 13, when in-state and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' rival Taylor University visits Gratz Field for a 3 p.m. start. It's the start of a four-game week for Coach Rick Espeset's squad, as they travel to Heidelberg College of Ohio for another important regional series Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17.
NOTES: Sophomore outfielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the overall offense's numbers for the day with five hits and two doubles. Shell and junior infielder Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.) were next with four hits each, while Nieman added to his early-season RBI success with four more, including three in game one, to push his season total to 22. Kimm finished with seven RBIs and a .600 slugging percentage. … MU has scored 10-or-more runs in six of its eight wins this season. The Spartans' pitching staff has seen each of its starters go at least five innings or more in each game.
