TIFFIN, OHIO – Senior Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) fired seven strong innings in a game one win to help lead Manchester University to a split with Ohio Athletic Conference member Heidelberg College Sunday, March 17.
Konarski, improving to 2-0, surrendered just one run on seven hits while striking out five in the Spartans' 3-2 win. Junior Temujin Sery (Fort Wayne, Ind.) closed the door for his first save, scattering three hits over the final two frames.
MU (9-2-1) got more stellar starting pitching in the nightcap. Senior Justin Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind.) struck out six and didn't allow a walk. However, the Student Princes used a two-run third inning output and then received some solid pitching down the stretch, stranding five Black and Gold baserunners over the final three frames, to gain a 2-1 win and take the weekend series by a similar count.
The Spartan offense was topped by senior outfielder Cody Schell (Granger, Ind.) and junior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.) in game two. Schell rapped out two hits, while Nieman drove in his team-leading 26th RBI of the season. Senior Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) led the way in the opener with two hits and an RBI.
Manchester University returns home for a non-conference, regional and in-state clash with Wabash College Tuesday, March 19. Game time at Gratz Field is 4 p.m.
