LEXINGTON, KY. – A pair of strong starting pitching performances helped key No. 16-ranked D3Baseball.com and No. 22-ranked Division III American Baseball Coaches Association Manchester University to a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep Saturday, March 30.
Senior Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) upped his season record to 4-0 with his first complete game effort in the opener. He struck out six and scattered seven Pioneer hits during the 2-1 Spartan victory.
MU's offense gave their pitcher enough breathing room with a two-run fifth inning rally. Junior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.) drove in his 34th RBI of the year, while the eventual game-winning score scooted across on an infield error. Konarski left three TU runners on base with the potential tying run over the final four frames to seal the decision.
Game two was highlighted by a six-run Black and Gold rally over the two frames to aid the pitching of senior starter Justin Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Senior shortstop Corey Marchant blasted a home run and drove in four runs, while senior right fielder Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) added three hits as part of an 8-1 victory. Scott fired eight innings of seven-hit, no-earned run ball and didn't allow a walk.
Manchester University moves into a busy week of conference play with a trip to Anderson University Tuesday, April 2. Game time is 4:15 p.m. for the co-league leaders at AU's Don Branden Field.
