Spartan Shorts: The Spartans begin a four-game week with the Yellowjackets' visit. MU (19-3-1 overall, 9-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) rides an overall and home six-game win streak and is 9-1-1 in its last 11 home contests. … The Black and Gold have a two-game lead on the conference standings chart over second-place Hanover. … MU hit a robust .368 over a three-game weekend series sweep of Earlham April 5 and 6. Senior outfielder Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) topped the individual list at .615 with eight hits and five RBIs, while sophomore second baseman Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) and junior third baseman Jordan Niemann (Michigan City, Ind.) each had six hits and .462 averages. Murphy and senior shortstop Corey Marchant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) moved their on-base streaks to 28 and 24, respectively, during the series. … The Spartans were also strong on the mound against the Quakers. Murphy earned a win and save, while senior starter Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) upped his record to 5-0 with a seven-inning, four-strikeout effort, and fellow senior starter Justin Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind.) improved to 3-1 with eight and two-thirds innings of five-strikeout work April 6. … The league leaders continue to hold strong status in the HCAC statistics report. On the mound, Murphy remains the conference's ERA leader at 0.52, while Scott and Konarski are three-four at 1.73 and 2.25, respectively. Konarski's game one victory over Earlham last weekend moved him into the wins lead (five.), and Murphy is tied for the saves lead (six). At the plate, Nieman is first in RBIs (38) and among a four-way tie with three home runs. Marchant is also in the top five in RBIs, sitting in a tie for fourth (24), while Murphy, due to his weekend stretch, has jumped into the top five in batting average (.387 – 5th). The trio of senior outfielder Cody Schell (Granger, Ind.), Kimm and sophomore outfielder Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) stand three-through-five in stolen bases with 13, 11 and 10, respectively. … The Spartans have won 10 of the last 14 against Defiance dating back through 2006. The two sides split last year's games with each team winning on the other's home field.

Big Weekend Set: It's a battle of the top two HCAC squads, as the Black and Gold hosts Hanover Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. Saturday's games serve as part of Manchester University's Spartan Sports Management's "Spartan Slam" celebration.
