MU closes regular season on high note

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Senior pitcher Kyle Konarski (Elkhart, Ind.) continued his unbeaten pitching string to highlight a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Mt. St. Joseph Saturday, May 4.

Konarski, moving to 9-0 on the season with his 11th consecutive decision, went five and a third innings and struck out three. One of 10 members of the Class of 2013 recognized during the afternoon, he received more than enough offensive support.

Manchester University rattled Mt. St. Joseph with 21 hits, including eight doubles, en route to a 19-4 win. Five players ended game one with multiple-hit efforts led by senior outfielders Bryce Murphy (Ossian, Ind.) and Austin Rieke (Fishers, Ind.) with three hits each. Murphy also scored four runs, and Rieke drove in three runs. Sophomore second baseman Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) led the way with four RBIs.

The Spartans received a stiff test in the nightcap and series closer against MSJ. After trailing 2-0 after two innings, the visitors answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Senior pitcher Justin Scott (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kept the score level, firing eight innings of three-strikeout ball.

MU's offense finally got through against the Lions' staff in the eighth, plating six runs. Senior shortstop Corey Marchant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), junior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.), Kimm, and senior outfielder Cody Schell (Granger, Ind.) all singled in runs, and sophomore designated hitter Kyle Norris (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a run with a sacrifice fly in the rally.

MU (32-5-1 overall), riding a nine-game win streak in which they've scored 10-or-more runs five times, now begins preparations to host the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Thursday, May 9, through Saturday, May 11.

NOTES: Niemann and Norris both kept long hitting streaks rolling Saturday. Niemann increased his to a team-best 15 games, while Norris moved to 13 straight. … Senior first baseman Brad Murphy (Fort Wayne, Ind.) increased his on-base streak to 27 consecutive contests. … The Black and Gold have captured 16 of their last 20 games at Gratz Field.
