Trzeciak heroics lift Manchester University to split

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A frenetic week opened with strong results for Manchester University Sunday, March 19.

The Spartans, beginning a span of seven games in six days, rebounded from an 8-4 first game loss to Ohio Athletic Conference power Heidelberg University with a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win in the nightcap. Junior designated hitter Alec Trzeciak (Charlotte, Mich.) hit a bullet to left center field that split the Student Princes' left and center fielders in pursuit and chased home junior pinch-runner Chad Champion, Jr., with the game-winning run in the Black and Gold's final at-bat.

Four members of Coach Rick Espeset's team turned in multiple-hit efforts to help lead the way to a second win in the last four outings for Manchester University (2-7). Senior outfielder Chad Schultz (Fair Oaks, Ind.) drilled a pair of doubles and scored twice; senior first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) tallied two hits and drove in two runs; junior outfielder Eric Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) had a pair of hits and scored a run; and freshman catcher Joe Gallatin (Muncie, Ind.) finished with two hits and an RBI as part of a 10-hit team attack. Senior hurler Corey Ferguson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) benefitted from the outburst, allowing just one hit and one earned run over three frames while striking out two to gain the win.

The opened ended just out of reach. Sophomore outfielder Tyler LaFollette (Warsaw, Ind.) singled in two runs to top the offense, but Heidelberg took advantage of six home team errors in route to the decision. On the mound, the bullpen trio of freshman Craig Overpeck (Rockville, Ind.), senior Joey Covington (Muncie, Ind.) and senior Mason Neuman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) as they weren't touched for an earned run and surrendered only four hits over the final three innings to keep the Spartans close.

Manchester University continues the hectic span Tuesday, March 21, winding up the series with Heidelberg at HU's Patriots Park at Peaceful Valley. First pitch is 4 p.m.
