Black and Gold drop conference road clash
ANDERSON, IND. – A three-goal second half propelled Anderson University past Manchester University in a key late-season Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash Wednesday, Oct. 24.
The Spartans, falling to 5-12-1 overall and 3-4-1 in league play, kept themselves even with their hosts throughout a large share of the first half. Anderson (8-10-1, 4-3-1 HCAC) broke the deadlock with a rebound goal in the final moments of the half.
The home side added a quick goal early in the second half on a breakaway, but MU rallied back after a hand ball was called in the box. Senior midfielder Dian Radev (Burgas, Bulgaria) converted the penalty kick successfully for his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-1 with over 32 minute remaining. The Spartans pushed back down the field for a corner kick soon thereafter but couldn't tie the contest up. Anderson kept Manchester silent from that point and added two more scores for a 4-1 final.
Senior goalkeeper Grant Noakes (LaPorte, Ind.) managed nine saves in the wake of 26-6 shots advantage for the home team. Radev wound up with the lone shot on goal for MU, while senior defender/midfielder/forward Cody Freels (Auburn, Ind.) tallied two overall shots.
Manchester wraps up its 2012 campaign with a Senior Day match against co-league-leading Rose-Hulman Saturday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Spartan Field. Coach Good and his staff and team will recognize its eight members of the Class of 2013 during the afternoon.
