ALMA, MICH. – A singles' win from freshman Matt Buncich (Goshen, Ind.) highlighted Manchester University's double dual at Alma College Saturday, March 9.
Buncich, gaining his first victory of the 2012-13 campaign, battled back from an opening-set 6-3 loss to Huntington College's Matt Wilcox for a 7-5 second set victory that forced a superbreaker. Buncich took a 10-7 decision in the format for the Spartans' point in an 8-1 loss to Huntington.
Fellow freshman Ryan Hawkins (LaPorte, Ind.) turned in a strong match at number six singles, pushing the Foresters' Jacob Cross to a 7-5 final in the first set of a 7-5, 6-2 finish. He and Buncich teamed up for four points at number three doubles, too.
Alma took a 9-0 win from the Black and Gold in the second dual. The doubles' combinations of junior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) and sophomore Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) and sophomores Phil Pruitt (Huntington, Ind.) and Alex Winger (Warsaw, Ind.) each registered five points at number one and two.
MU (1-4) resumes its spring season March 28 with a dual at Indiana University-East. The date also serves as the opener of the women's team's spring schedule.
