Black and Gold gain home victory

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University picked up its second straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual decision Saturday, April 20, topping Mt. St. Joseph 7-2.
The Spartans moved into seventh on the league standings just one loss behind sixth-place Hanover. The win upped their record to 2-3 in conference play and 3-8 overall.
Manchester swept the Lions' doubles line-up to create a 3-0 lead going into singles play. Junior Miro Arguijo (Corpus Christi, Tx.) and sophomore Phil Truitt (Huntington, Ind.) cruised past Tyler Esham and Max Withrow at the two spot with an 8-4 victory. The one doubles tandem of junior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, IN.) and sophomore Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, IN.) outlasted opponents Clayton Steinriede and Kyle Hass 9-7, improving their record as a doubles pair to an impressive 6-4.
The team continued its momentum into singles play, winning four out of the six matches to seal the victory. Lahman and Swaby combined with sophomore Alex Winger (Warsaw, IN.) to post straight-set wins over their opponents. Lahman topped Steinriede 6-0, 6-2 at one singles, Swaby defeated Haas 6-2, 7-6 at two singles, and Winger came out ahead against Drew Royalty 6-2, 6-1 at six singles. Truitt fought off a three-set match to earn the win over MSJ's Withrow to end the day for the Spartans.
The Black and Gold wraps up the regular season with a span of five contests in six days. The span begins Monday, April 22, with conference home match against Defiance College at 4:00 p.m.
