NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University, after a back-and forth Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference battle with Defiance College, found itself on the tough end of a 5-4 final Monday, April 22.
Manchester (3-9 overall, 2-4 HCAC) held close matches at all three doubles spots. The one doubles team of sophomore Kyle Lahman (North Manchester, Ind.) and junior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) found themselves victorious, defeating Defiance's Cord Speelman and Ryan Nelson 9-8. It was the third straight win for the duo, as their season record moved to 7-4. The Black and Gold narrowly missed at number two as well. Junior Miro Arguijo (Corpus Christi, Tex.) and sophomore Phil Truitt (Huntington, Ind.) were held off 9-7 by their Yellowjackets' opponents.
MU picked up some momentum in singles play, splitting the six matches. Lahman raised his record to 7-4 at one singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over DC's Mike Ross. Swaby put together an impressive comeback after finding himself down at two singles following a 7-6 first set defeat. He rallied for a 6-2 second set win and a 10-7 victory in the third set super breaker. Sophomore Alex Winger (Warsaw, IN.) concluded the day with his decision at six singles, cruising over opponent Tyler Thiel 6-0, 6-4.
The Spartans, sitting in a tie for seventh with Defiance on the league standings, travel to rival Anderson University Wednesday, April 24. The match-up against the Ravens, who are just a half-game ahead in sixth, starts at 4:00 p.m.
