ADRIAN, MICH. – Attempting to earn some team points in singles' action before inclement weather intervened, Manchester University's women's tennis squad was stopped by Adrian College of Michigan 6-0 in a non-conference dual Wednesday, Sept. 11.
The Spartans, seeing their record go level (1-1), were topped in all three doubles' matches and in singles competition at the number one, five and six spots by the host Bulldogs. However, seniors Abby Berry (Huntington, Ind.) and Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) and sophomore Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) were each leading in the second set of their singles' matches at numbers three through five before weather chased the teams from the courts at Craft Tennis Complex. Buckner and Leeper had each opened with first set wins.
MU and Adrian men's teams squared off. The Spartans, falling to 0-2, were defeated 9-0, but senior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) and freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) each pushed their singles' opponents to 7-5 second set scores.
The Black and Gold women's team concludes its week by beginning the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of its schedule Saturday, Sept. 14. A 10 a.m. dual at Transylvania University is on the docket.
