NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Singles wins from senior Bobby Swaby (Farmersburg, Ind.) and freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) and victories from number five and six singles and the three doubles combination of freshman Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) and senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) headlined Manchester University's non-conference double dual with the University of St. Francis Thursday, Sept. 26.
Swaby evened his fall singles' mark with his second win in four tries, taking down the Cougars' Ryan Mey in straight sets with just one game surrendered, while Smith continued an impressive start to his collegiate career with a three-set nailbiter over Matt Stallman that ended with a 10-5 tiebreaker. Coach Eric Christiansen's squad fell 7-2 but was close in all three doubles contests with a pair of 8-5 losses and an 8-6 defeat.
In the women's portion of the dual, USF reeled off straight-set wins from number one through four singles en route to a 6-3 victory. Bower, moving to 5-2 on the year, stopped the visitors' roll, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Hunter Cunningham at number five, and Beckner took a forfeit at number six. The two teamed up at number three doubles for a forfeit win as well.
Manchester University's women continue a four-dual home week schedule with Rose-Hulman's visit Saturday, Sept. 28. First serve at the university's outdoor courts is 12 p.m.
NOTES: Bower's doubles resume has been just as strong as her singles' efforts. She stands 4-2 with sophomore Morgan Wolf (Otterbein, Ind.) and Beckner as partners … Smith and Swaby are both 2-2 in singles play, while Smith has won two of three doubles' matches this fall. He's been joined by senior Miro Arguijo III (Corpus Christi, Texas) and fellow freshman Jacob Bailey (Connorsville, Ind.) … MU's men still have one dual remaining this fall, as they are scheduled to host Franklin College as part of a double-dual Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at the university's outdoor courts.
