Manchester remains .500 on spring trip
CLERMONT, FLA. – Fueled by a strong offensive attack in the opener, Manchester University managed a split on day two of its 2013 spring break trip Monday, March 18.
A 6-4 win over Wellesley College of Massachusetts in the opener highlighted the action. MU broke up a scoreless tie in the third with a four-run rally with senior outfielder Kayla Yates (Delphi, Ind.) delivering a two-run single. The Black and Gold added single scores in the third and sixth to assist sophomore pitcher Maureen Lund (Huntington, Ind.) who went the distance for the decision.
Eight Spartans wound up with at least one hit in the opener. Sophomore shortshop Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) and junior outfielder Kaitlyn Schmidt (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each ended with two hits. MU (3-3) also used aggressive base running to its advantage with six stolen bases, as sophomore outfielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.) and Willmann each took two.
In the nightcap, UW-Stout got out of the gates quickly and didn't look back en route to a 12-0, five-inning win. The Black and Gold nearly spoiled the shutout bid in the second inning when Stephan lined a single to center but a strong throw from a Blue Devlis' outfielder gunned down freshman infielder Jessica Chorak (Hammond, Ind.) as she tried to score.
Manchester University's varsity squad breaks from competition in Florida until Wednesday, March 20. They are scheduled to play Ramapo College of New Jersey at 9 a.m. and Calvin College of Michigan at 3 p.m.
