Black and Gold open busy stretch with split
WINONA LAKE, IND. – Freshman catcher Kaile Niezgodski (South Bend, Ind.) drove in four runs and homered in game two to help lift Manchester University to a non-conference split with Grace College Thursday, March 28.
Niezgodski's two-run blast to straightaway center field spotlighted a six-run sixth inning rally for the Spartans (6-6). The two sides had battled to a 4-4 tie through five frames to that point.
The freshman led the offense's 11-hit attack in the 11-7 win. Senior outfielder Kayla Yates (Delphi, Ind.) rapped three hits, including her team-best third triple of the year, to go with two RBIs. Junior first baseman Janikka Tillotson (Brownsburg, Ind.) added two RBIs.
The nightcap run attack for the Spartans helped sophomore pitcher Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.) pick up her second win of the year. She struck out five, walked just two and allowed only four earned runs en route to the complete-game effort.
The opener went to the Lancers (5-13) by a 4-1 count. The Black and Gold outhit them 6-5 but three errors led to four unearned runs for Grace.
Sophomore pitcher Maureen Lund (Huntington, Ind.) struck out five and allowed just two walks to keep Manchester University close. Freshman second baseman Jessica Chorak (Hammond, Ind.) led the offense with two hits.
The Spartans resume their current stretch of eight games in six days with a non-league twinbill at Albion College of Michigan Friday, March 29. Game time between the Spartans and Britons is 3 p.m. at Dempsey Field on Albion's campus.
