ALBION, MICH. – A 27-run, 30-hit offensive attack helped fuel a pair of non-conference wins for Manchester University Friday, March 29.
The Spartans, moving to 8-6 on the season, turned in a 14-1 win in game one and 13-0 five-inning victory in game two over Albion College at Dempsey Field. Freshman outfielder Kaile Niezgodski (South Bend, Ind.) led an 18-hit performance in game one with three hits, while the trio of freshman designated hitter Mackenzie Williams (Fort Wayne, Ind.), junior third baseman Kylie Planck (Valparaiso, Ind.) and sophomore outfielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.) each finished with two hits in the nightcap as part of 12 safeties.
MU's pitching staff also shone brightly in both games. Sophomore Maureen Lund (Huntington, Ind.) struck out four in game one to pick up her fifth win of the season. Sophomore Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.) and junior Brittney Wetzel (Hamilton, Ind.) combined for a no-hitter in game two, as they each struck out two and walked just one between them.
The Black and Gold put their three-game win streak on the line Saturday, March 30. The College of Mt. St. Joseph visits Spartan Field in North Manchester for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both sides with a 12 p.m. start.
NOTES: The game two pitching effort marked the second time in as many years that Nash was involved in a no-hitter. She managed the same result against Thomas College last year on the Florida spring break trip. … Wetzel's line for the day was impressive. She went four innings out of the bullpen with four Ks, no runs or walks allowed and just two hits surrendered. The junior hasn't given up a run and been nicked for only two hits in three appearances this year. … Williams led the offense for the twinbill with a combined five hits and four RBIs.
