NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Manchester University rolled out to early leads in both games of a home doubleheader against Huntington University, but the visiting Foresters used middle-innings rallies to thwart the Spartans Friday, April 26.
MU (15-13) scored three in the home half of the first in the opener, led by a solo home run from senior outfielder Kayla Yates (Delphi, Ind.) and an RBI single from freshman designated player Kalie Niezgodski (South Bend, Ind.). Huntington (18-14) answered with two in the third and five in the third. The home side whittled the deficit down to 8-6 through six frames but could get no closer in a 9-6 defeat.
Niezgodski's two hits and sophomore shortstop Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) two runs' scored led the offense. Sophomore pitcher Maureen Lund (Huntington, Ind.) struck out five but the visitors still managed eight runs and six hits during her four innings of work.
Game two saw another early rally for the Black and Gold. Sophomore outfielder Shannon Stephan (Granger, Ind.) drove in three runs with a double in the home half of the second, and sophomore pitcher Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.) made it stand through three frames by not allowing a hit.
However, Huntington finally got its offense going with four in the fourth behind three hits and extended the lead to 8-3 with three more in the sixth. The Spartans tried to answer back with a run in and two on in the seventh with just one out before back-to-back outs sealed the 8-4 Foresters' win.
Stephan and Yates both turned in multiple-hit games in the nightcap. Nash struck out five and went the distance with just four earned runs surrendered.
The Black and Gold return to action Saturday, April 27, when Rose-Hulman visits Spartan Field for a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up. First pitch is 1 p.m. for the Senior Day 2013 doubleheader.
