MU upended by Transylvania

LEXINGTON, KY. – Led by the play of freshman forward Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Manchester University battled Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Transylvania University Saturday, Dec. 8.

Arterburn, reeling off her third straight double-figure scoring game, knocked down 10 points and picked up three steals for Coach Josh Dzurick's squad in a 62-41 loss to the league unbeaten Pioneers. Meiklejohn just missed scoring double digits with nine points and also pulled down five rebounds for the Spartans (2-5, 2-1 HCAC).

MU stayed close to its hosts (5-1, 3-0 HCAC) throughout a good share of the first half. The Black and Gold held two leads and forged two ties in the opening eight-plus minutes. Transylvania took off on a 20-8 run from the final tie of the game (12-12) to lead 32-20 at the break. The Pioneers continued the run to open the second half with a 24-8 stretch that put the game out of reach.

Other strong numbers for Manchester University belonged to freshman guard Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) with six points and a team-high four assists and sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) who recorded her fourth straight contest of five-or-more rebounds.

MU returns to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a conference clash with Mt. St. Joseph Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is 1 p.m.

NOTES: Arterburn's consecutive made free throw streak ended at 15 late in the first half. … Going into next weekend's meeting with the Lions, MU is situated in a three-way tie for second on the league standings with Franklin and MSJ, while Defiance and Transylvania are both 3-0.
