REDLANDS, CALIF. – Taking advantage of a strong rebounding advantage, Manchester University managed to top Marian University of Wisconsin 46-40 in its final game at the University of Redlands' Winter Classic Saturday, Dec. 29.
The Spartans, improving to 4-7, out-boarded the Sabres (3-8) 48-32. Junior forward Erynn Meilkejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the glass-cleaning efforts with nine boards, marking the sixth time she's recorded five-or-more rebounds in a game. Meiklejohn also tallied six points, tying her with three others for the team scoring lead.
Junior guard Janelle Moss (Columbia City, Ind.) joined Meiklejohn with a strong rebound total with seven. She also scored six points en route to all-tournament team honors. Sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Brownsburg, Ind.) ended with six points and three assists, while freshman guard Dani Rettig (Fowler, Ind.) finished with six points and six rebounds.
MU trailed 7-3 early in the first half but rebounded with a 12-2 run for a 15-9 lead with 6:54 left en route to a 24-16 halftime lead. The Black and Gold built as large as a 14-point lead in the second stanza before weathering a late Marian run to seal the victory.
The host Bulldogs jumped out to a 19-9 lead early on en route to a 70-29 win Dec. 28. MU struggled from the field during the California trip opener hitting just 22 percent from the field for the game and 14.3 percent in the second half.
Moss tallied eight points to lead the Spartans. Childress led the squad with five rebounds and had one of the two blocked shots, while freshman guard Kelcey Daugherty (Greenwood, Ind.) registered the other.
Manchester University resumes its 2012-13 schedule by continuing the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Anderson University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside O.C. Lewis Gymnasium on Anderson's campus.
