RICHMOND, IND. – The guard tandem of junior Janelle Moss (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) each registered double figures Saturday, Jan. 5, leading Manchester University in a 41-39 loss at Earlham College.
Moss, topping the scoring chart for the Spartans (5-8, 4-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference), tallied 14 points on six-of-14 shooting and also dished out a team-high three assists. She also grabbed six rebounds for Coach Josh Dzurick's team. Arterburn came off the bench to score 13 points, hitting three three-pointers in the process.
MU jumped out to an early 8-2 lead but tough luck field goal shooting kept the Black and Gold from extending the advantage. Earlham (2-11 overall, 1-5 HCAC) rallied back and held an 18-13 lead with less than five minutes to go in the first half. The Spartans answered to end the frame with a 10-4 stretch for a 23-22 halftime advantage.
Both teams held the lead in the second half. The Quakers opened with an 8-2 span for a 30-25 lead before Manchester University reeled off a 9-2 run of its own to lead 34-32 with 6:30 to go. A five-plus minute scoring drought for the Spartans gave Earlham another opportunity which led to a 38-34 edge that they didn't relinquish. MU had a pair of chances to tie in the final minute but couldn't convert.
The Spartans return to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a key HCAC match-up with Defiance Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: Junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the Spartans with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. … Sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) garnered four boards to extend her run of multiple-rebound contests to 23. … The loss dropped Manchester University into a tie for third with Franklin and Hanover on the league standings chart, just a game behind co-league leaders Defiance and Transylvania.
