A battle between two teams among the top five of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference is center stage at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena Wednesday, Jan. Defiance College of Ohio enters the meeting with Manchester University tied for first with Transylvania atop the loop standings at 5-1, while the Spartans (4-2) are part of a three-way tie for third with Franklin and Hanover.

Spartan Shorts: MU sports a 5-8 overall record. … Coach Josh Dzurick's squad is coming off a 41-39 loss at Earlham this past weekend. The guard tandem of junior Janelle Moss (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) each registered double figures to highlight the game. Moss topped the scoring charts for the Spartans tallying 14 points on six-of-14 shooting for her third double-digit game of the year. She also dished out a team-high three assists and grabbed six rebounds. Arterburn, registering her sixth double-figure contest of the season, came off the bench to score 13 points, hitting three three-pointers in the process. … Sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) continued an impressive streak at Earlham by garnering four boards to extend her run of multiple-rebound contests to 23. … Junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.), MU's scoring leader with a 9.1 points-per-game average, is among the top 20 of the conference in scoring (20th). Also the squad's rebounding leader (5.5 pg), she is within the top 15 of the HCAC in the category (14th). Arterburn is part of the HCAC top 10 in three-point field goal accuracy (26 pct. – 6th) and steals (1.7 pg – T-9th), while freshman guard Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) is tied for ninth in assists (2.6 pg), and sophomore center Alyssa Hammond (Osgood, Ind.) is tied for ninth in blocked shots (.7 pg). … The clash between the Black and Gold and Yellowjackets is one of two Wednesday match-ups pitting the top five conference schools against each other, as Hanover visits Transylvania, too. Franklin, part of the three-way third-place knot, hosts Mt. St. Joseph.
