FRANKLIN, IND. – Manchester University battled Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Franklin to the wire Saturday, Jan. 12, but a five-point run to close the game led the host Grizzlies to a 47-43 win.
Sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Indianapolis, Ind.) guided Coach Josh Dzurick's squad. She tallied 12 points, two assists, four rebounds and a blocked shot. Her point total was aided by hitting two-of-three three-point baskets and a four-for-four afternoon at the free throw line.
MU, falling to 6-9 overall and 5-3 in the HCAC, rallied back from a 13-point second half deficit on the heels of a 14-0 run that spanned over five minutes of the second half. Childress, as part of her strong outing, tallied four points in the run as did junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.).
Manchester continued to hold the advantage inside the final minute (43-42). Franklin answered with a lay-up, a three-of-four effort at the free throw line, two defensive rebounds and a pair of blocked shots on Spartan three-point attempts to earn the decision.
Looking further into MU's numbers, the freshman guard combination of Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) came off the bench to tally six points each. Field also grabbed five rebounds, while Arterburn totaled six as part of a 35-27 edge on the boards.
MU wraps up the first half of the 2012-13 HCAC slate with a home game against Bluffton Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tipoff time is 7:30 p.m. inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
NOTES: Childress' double-figure point total was her first of the season. She finished the two-game week averaging nine points per game and hitting four-of-five three-point buckets. … MU's loss dropped them into a tie with Hanover for fourth place in the league. The two teams trail Defiance and Franklin by one game for second and Transylvania by two games for first.
