Spartan Shorts: MU began the 2012-13 league campaign with a 76-74 white-knuckler win over Hanover on the road in early December. The decision stopped a five-game Panther streak in the series. … The Black and Gold enter the weekend with a 7-11 overall and 6-5 HCAC mark. They stand fifth on the conference standings, two games in back of a three-way for second between Defiance, Franklin and Hanover. … MU began its two-game week with a narrow 39-34 loss to Rose-Hulman Tuesday. The Spartans held as big as a nine-point second half advantage before the visitors ended the game on a 17-4 run. Individual highlights in the contest came from the guard duo of junior Janelle Moss (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who were tied for the scoring lead with eight points each; sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) who grabbed eight rebounds for the fourth time in a contest this season; sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Indianapolis, Ind.) who took away six steals, the most in a game for the Spartans since December of 2011; and junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who blocked two Fightin' Engineer shot attempts. … Freshman guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore center Alyssa Hammond (Ossian, Ind.) are both ranked among the top 10 of the HCAC in differing statistical categories. Arterburn is fifth in three-point field goal percentage (28 pct.), while Hammond is tied for ninth in blocked shots (.6 pg). Arterburn is just outside the top 10 in steals (11th – 1.6 pg) as is Meiklejohn in blocked shots (12th - .6 pg).

Home and Away Week: The Black and Gold go to Defiance College of Ohio Wednesday, Jan. 30, for a 7:30 p.m. start and then return to Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Franklin Saturday, Feb. 2.
