Spartans gain key league road win
DEFIANCE, OHIO – A balanced scoring attack and strong defense helped propel Manchester University to a completion of the 2012-13 season series sweep of Defiance Wednesday, Jan. 30.
The Spartans, moving to 8-12 overall and 7-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 61-48 victory, placed three individuals in double figures while limiting the host Yellowjackets (11-9, 8-5 HCAC) to 31.1 percent field goal shooting.
Defiance got out of the gates fast, scoring the game's first six points, but a 15-2 run by the Black and Gold from that point gave Coach Josh Dzurick's team a lead they wouldn't relinquish. MU stretched the margin out to nine (23-14) at halftime and as much as 17 in the second frame before ending with the 13-point decision.
Freshman guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) came off the bench for 12 points, two assists and a four-of-seven overall and two-of-four three-point field goal shooting night. Sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 10 points, three blocked shots and six rebounds, and sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Indianapolis, Ind.) rounded out the Spartans' double-digit games with 11 points. Sophomore guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) turned in team highs of three assists and two steals.
Manchester University continues its home-and-away week with another pivotal late-season league battle Saturday, Feb. 2. Franklin visits Stauffer-Wolfe Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
NOTES: Arterburn registered her 10th double-figure scoring game of the year. … Hamilton extended an impressive personal streak, as her three assists upped her run of successive multiple-assist contests to five. … Lang's three blocked shots were a personal and team single-game high. … Wednesday's win kept the Spartans in fifth on the league standings chart, a game ahead of Rose-Hulman and only one behind Defiance for fourth.
