Franklin slips past Spartans
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the scoring chart for Manchester University during a close-knit 44-42 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Franklin Saturday, Feb. 2.
Meiklejohn poured in 13 points on four-of-seven field goal shooting which included a three-pointer for Coach Josh Dzurick's team (8-13, 7-7 HCAC). Sophomore center Alyssa Hammond (Ossian, Ind.) came off the bench for a nine-point game for MU. She also grabbed a co-team high six rebounds.
Manchester got out to a strong start, rolling out to a 23-14 lead late in the first half. However, Franklin (17-4, 11-3 HCAC) answered with a 20-3 run that stretched from the 6:48 mark of the opening frame to the 12:06 mark of the second half for a 34-26 advantage. The Spartans battled back, trimming the deficit to two twice in the final 1:30 but couldn't even the score.
The Black and Gold take to the road for the final time during the 2012-13 regular season Wednesday, Feb. 6, for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Bluffton.
NOTES: The loss dropped MU into a tie for fifth with Rose-Hulman on the conference standings. … Other leaders for Manchester were freshman guard Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) with three assists and five rebounds; sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Indianapolis, Ind.) who shared the team-high with Hammonds in rebounds; and sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.), freshman guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore guard Alyssa Smith (Bluffton, Ind.) who each picked up two steals. … Meiklejohn recorded her fifth double-figure scoring game. … Field's afternoon continued a good run for the freshman. She's averaged 7.8 points and four rebounds over the last five games which is tied for first on the team (scoring) and among the top five (rebounding). She has also hit six treys and nearly 80 percent from the free throw line during the span.
