Spartan Shorts: Manchester University is among a four-way battle for the final two spots in the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament going into the final week of the regular season. The Spartans (8-15 overall, 7-9 HCAC) are tied with Rose-Hulman for fifth with Bluffton and Anderson close behind at 6-10 in league play. … Coach Josh Dzurick's team won the season series opener from their league rivals 68-65 on the road in early January. The Black and Gold have won four straight and seven of the last eight meetings dating back through the second edition of the 2008-09 season. … MU narrowly missed a big home win over league-leading Transylvania in its last game Feb. 9. The inside combination of sophomore forward Abby Lang (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior forward Erynn Meiklejohn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the scoring chart in the 57-49 defeat. The two each tallied nine points, while Meiklejohn blocked a team-high two Pioneer shot attempts to go with her point total. … Looking further into last weekend's box score, sophomore guard Jocelyn Hamilton (Columbus, Ind.) topped the team in assists (7) and steals (3). Freshman guard Hannah Field (Fort Wayne, Ind.) dished out five assists of her own, while sophomore guard Alyssa Smith (Bluffton, Ind.) led the way on the glass with five rebounds. … Hamilton's assist and steal totals resumed a strong recent trend in both categories. She has seven multiple-assist finishes in the last eight games and four multiple-steal contests in the span of the last five games. … Meiklejohn's blocked shot effort against Transylvania helped jump her up into the conference's top 10 with an average of .7 per game. Field is just outside of the top 10 in assists, ranking 11th with a 2.5 pg average. Sophomore guard Jaimie Childress (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman guard Katie Arterburn (Indianapolis, Ind.) are both in the top six in three-point field goal accuracy. Childress remains the leader at 44.4 percent, while Arterburn is sixth at 31.5 percent. … MU also has a top 100 ranking on the current NCAA Division III national report. They are 85th in three-point field goal percentage defense, allowing the opposition to convert just 25.9 percent of its attempts.
