Spartans put two-game league skein on line

Manchester University, who's jumped into a tie for fifth on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, faces Hanover College in an important first half tilt Saturday, Jan. 6.

Game details: Tip-off time is 1 p.m. at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena … Live audio, statistics and video are available via links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … MU, with back-to-back Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference wins in tow, sports a 3-9 overall and 2-3 league record … Recent series history has seen six of the last ten meetings being decided by 10-points-or-less.

Spartan Shorts: Coach Josh Dzurick's squad opened a set of back-to-back home games on a high note Jan. 3. The 58-50 decision over Franklin College was due in large part to a consistent offensive attack, as MU turned in a stable 42.9 percent rate from the field overall, sent eight of 18 three-point attempts home and converted at a steady 72.7 percent clip at the free throw line.  Sophomore guard Haley Farris (Sharpsville, Ind.) drilled a three to break the scoring ice nearly three minutes in, part of an 11-4 start, and the Black and Gold never trailed over the 40 minutes. Farris tallied a team-leading 16 points, picked off three steals and grabbed four rebounds to help lead the way. Fellow sophomore guard Nicole Weaver (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was next in line with 11 points to go with four rebounds and four assists, and freshman Mikalia Taylor (Connersville, Ind.) kept the underclasswoman front court theme going with 10 points and three steals … Farris' fourth double-digit output helped her average rise to a season-best 8.8 per game. The sophomore has been on a steady rise over her last nine appearances, averaging just under 11 points per outing in the span … Weaver, who ranks among the conference's top 10 in scoring, assists, and steals, harbors a run of seven consecutive double-figure point contests … Taylor is also climbing the scoring charts, posting better than 10 points per game in her last four appearances to close just seven-tenths shy of joining Weaver and junior forward/center Beth Schaefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) for season double-figure average.

Anderson Series Begins: The Black and Gold travel to AU's O.C. Lewis Gymnasium Wednesday, Jan. 10. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
