Thomas More clips Spartans in Sunday matinee

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – A pair of goals posted just over three minutes apart helped key visiting Thomas More College to a 4-0 win over Manchester University Sunday, Sept. 15.

The Spartans (3-3-1) did get some opportunities in the Thomas More goal area in the second half. Junior midfielder Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.), looking to extend her game streak in which she's scored a goal to five straight, received a beautiful pass from the right side in the early portion of the second stanza and headed a shot to the high side of the visitors' goal, but freshman goalkeeper Christy Smith dove and made the save to keep the Black and Gold off the board. Manchester University also had a pair of late corner kick chances that were turned away.

The home crowd at Spartan Field saw MU's defense keep it scoreless with their National Soccer Coaches Association of America No. 14-ranked squad into the 17th minute. TMC (4-1) finally broke through the defense at 17:35 when sophomore forward Olivia Huber took advantage of a deflected shot attempt by freshman defender Laura Felix and slipped it into the net. Huber came back three minutes and eight seconds later and scored her second and final goal to give the Saints a 2-0 lead which they took to halftime. The visitors added two more scores in the six-minute span, from the 61st and 67th minutes, to reach their match total.

Thomas More held a 24-5 overall shots advantage and 13-3 edge on shots on goal. Barta ended with two of the attempts at the Saints' net, while junior defender Diane McAfee (Fort Wayne, Ind.) drilled a free kick in the second half that was corralled. On the defensive end, junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) finished with nine saves.

The Spartans resume a brief two-match home stand Wednesday, Sept. 18, when Heidelberg College of the Ohio Athletic Conference visits Spartan Field. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
