Richmond, Ind. – Manchester University made a strong early-season statement Thursday, Sept. 5, toppling National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' opponent Indiana University – East 7-2.
Manchester (1-0 overall) took a commanding lead after doubles play, only surrendering two games in the combined efforts at each of the three doubles positions. Senior doubles partners Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) and Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) picked up where they left off last spring, finishing the Red Wolves' Paige Froman and Chelsea Helms 8-2. The number two doubles tandem of senior Abby Berry (Huntington, Ind.) and sophomore Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) and the number three doubles team of senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) and sophomore Morgan Wolf (Otterbein, Ind.) both put up 8-0 wins.
With a 3-0 lead going into singles, the combined efforts of Berry, Bower and Wolf picking up victories at the four-through six slots, including straight-set decisions for Bower and Wolf, sealed the Black and Gold's team win. Leeper turned in the seventh and final point of the night with a straight-set win at number two singles.
