Spartans open league play

LEXINGTON, KY. – It was a day highlighted by two somewhat fresh faces as Manchester University went head to head with Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason second seed Transylvania University Saturday, Sept. 14. MU (1-2 overall, 0-1 conference), despite a showcase of promising play from all six positions, ultimately fell short to the Pioneers 6-3.

Leading the way with the lone doubles win was the tandem at three of senior returner Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) and freshman Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.), defeating the Pioneers' Savannah Barnett and Jessica Shotwell 8-2. Both Bower and Beckner would continue their dominance well into singles play, adding two additional points to the Black and Gold's overall score. Bower cruised at five singles over Barnett 7-5, 6-2, and Beckner showed much promise in her first collegiate tennis match for the Spartans, topping Shotwell 6-1, 6-1 at the six spot.

Manchester University will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 18. They compete in their home opener against HCAC contender Defiance College, with first serve scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
