NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Manchester University evened its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record with a solid 9-0 victory over Defiance College of Ohio Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The Spartans, improving to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, swept the visitors' doubles line-up to create a comfortable 3-0 lead going into singles play. The senior-led number one doubles tandem of Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) and Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) coasted over opponents Tasha Brown and Nicole Tank without dropping a game at 8-0.  Fellow seniors Abby Berry (Huntington, Ind.) and Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) followed suit, as Berry and freshman Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) combined for an 8-4 win at number two, and Bower and sophomore Morgan Wolf (Otterbein, Ind.) claimed an 8-1 victory at number three.

Gilley's luck would continue into singles. She finished the day not dropping a single game in her combined doubles and singles action, courtesy of a 6-0, 6-0 victory at one singles against the Yellow Jackets' Tasha Brown.  Sophomore Melinda Penrod (Pennville, Ind.) equaled that feat with a similar win at number six over Kayla Miller. Bower, picking up her third overall and second successive victory, and Leeper also added singles' wins with each of them surrendering only one game to their opponents at two and five, respectively.

Manchester University is back in action again Thursday, Sept. 19. They join the men's team for non-conference action against St. Francis University of Fort Wayne, Ind. First serve, at MU's outdoor courts, is 3 p.m.
