RICHMOND, IND. – A sweep of doubles' victories helped lead Manchester University to a 6-3 win at Earlham College's outdoor courts Sunday, Sept. 22.
The Spartans, earning their second straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference dual decision, used wins from the number one pairing of seniors Kara Gilley (Plymouth, Ind.) and Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.), the number two tandem of sophomore Megan Buckner (Muncie, Ind.) and senior Abby Berry (Huntington, Ind.) and the number three team of freshman Alaina Beckner (Columbia City, Ind.) and senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) to open a quick 3-0 lead. Berry, Bower and Leeper wrapped up the team win with straight-set singles' decisions at number two, four and five.
Manchester University returns to action Monday, Sept. 23, beginning a run of four straight home duals. Bethel College of Indiana visits for men's and women's competition that starts at 2:30 p.m.
NOTES: Bower, remaining the squad singles' win leader (four), claimed her third straight win and went to 3-0 in league play at number five. She's also experienced success in doubles, registering a combined 4-1 mark with Beckner and sophomore Melinda Penrod (Pennville, Ind.) … Berry and Leeper each improved to 3-1 in singles' matches by each winning their second straight.
