NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' member Bethel College of Mishawaka, Ind., won five of six singles' matches in straight sets and swept doubles play to topple Manchester University's women's team 9-0 Monday, Sept. 23.
The Pilots, moving to 7-5 on the year, surrendered just five games in three doubles' matches. Their roll continued in singles with straight-set victories at numbers one through four and six. Senior Jillian Bower (Galveston, Ind.) narrowly missed posting a point for the Spartans (3-3), dropping a three-set thriller (4-6, 6-2, 9-11) to Bethel's Samantha Lukas.
In the men's portion of the double dual, MU's 7-2 loss to Bethel was highlighted by the play of freshman Jacob Bailey. The Connorsville, Ind., native joined fellow freshman Stratton Smith (New Palestine, Ind.) to claim an 8-0 win at number one doubles. He followed that up with a three-set victory over Luke Prado at number two singles 7-6, 4-6, 10-5.
The Spartans fell to 0-3 with the loss. Manchester University's men and women return to action with a home double-dual against the University of St. Francis of Fort Wayne, Ind., Thursday, Sept. 26. First serve is 3:30 p.m.
