Adrian takes early standings’ lead at Pizza Hut tourney
NORTH MANCHESTER, IND – Fueled by a day one tourney high 27 kills from sophomore right side hitter Jordan Brisson, upstart Adrian College of Michigan picked up a pair of wins at the Manchester University Pizza Hut Invitational Friday, Sept. 13.
The Bulldogs, seeking their first win of 2013 coming in, got out of the gate fast, taking the first two sets from Ohio Wesleyan University (25-16, 25-18) and then answering a Battling Bishops' third set win (25-19) with a fourth set victory (25-8) of their own. They kept it going against Capital University of Ohio in the night's final match, coming back from an opening set 25-18 loss to the Crusaders to turn the tables with consecutive 28-26, 25-18, 25-17 decisions.
Following the tourney leaders, Anderson, University, Capital, and Ohio Wesleyan each sported .500 marks with a win and a loss each. The host Spartans dropped to 1-7 with a straight-set loss at the hands of OWU and were joined by Earlham College in looking to gain their first tournament win on day two.
Coach Kendra Marlowe's sophomore duo of outside hitter Sarah Pruden (Noblesville, Ind.) and setter Mikayla Munn (Elkhart, Ind.) gave the home fans inside Stauffer-Wolfe reason to cheer. Pruden hammered 15 kills at Ohio Wesleyan's defense with just four errors for a glittering .379 attack percentage. Munn added 25 assists to average better than eight (8.33) per set.
Day two action at the 2013 Pizza Hut Invitational begins at 11 a.m. on three courts inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena and the Physical Education and Recreation Center's auxiliary gym.
